burnt hickory loop hike 3/11/12

Jason and I spent most of Saturday in a stuffy conference room for the Cherokee County GOP Convention (another post for another day) witnessing/participating in one of the most nerve wracking and crazy experiences of my life. The Ron Paul camp was not welcome and there were some shady things going on that I will share more about later (are you surprised, though?). We exited as delegates to the district convention and alternates the state convention, thankfully, and it was worth it  for Dr. Paul. However, it left the nerves a bit rattled. So Sunday morning we woke up and I proposed we play hooky from church and go on a looong hike.

And we did.

We did what I guess is called the Burnt Hickory loop. Basically where you've seen me climb Kennesaw Mountain a few times, this hike goes the opposite way. It starts at the base of Little Kennesaw climbs that, then climbs big Kennesaw, then down that, then basically around the base of the mountain and cuts through back to Burnt Hickory Road where the trail head for that particular loop is. It's one of my favorite hikes... really challenging for the first couple of hours, nothing but easy peasy on the last hour or two. A plus was that we took the kids - Shiloh in her pack on Daddy's back, and Noah in his on my back, and Dakota on foot. They all did GREAT! No complaining - not even a second of complaining. Dakota did awesome too - he's been dragged out on trails since he was a babe and it seems to be ingrained in him (thankfully). We had some good one on one time too - talked about nuclear physics (!?!), some hard things in the past, (never easy), etc.

Afterwards we had pizza and hit the playground on the Marietta Square with the kids. It was a great day and we are so blessed to have access to so many AWESOME trails in the Atlanta metro area!
