here in chicago

Hey friends, just wanted to drop you a line... been kinda out of pocket for the last few days preparing for our trip and and traveling to Chicago... we drove all day on Saturday and a good part of Friday trying to get here to Chicago... but we've finally arrived. I love this place... this is where my husband's family first emigrated to just before WWI from what is now the Czech Republic (then Moravia/Bohemia), and we are here to execute stage two of the clean out of the Chrastek family home in La Grange Park. There are many years of memories and things in this home to go through and pack up to be brought back down to Georgia. Last time we were here it was like a treasure recovery mission... we unearthed absolutely awesome memorabilia from the WWII era - things like bags full of letters between Jason's grandmother and grandfather while he was deployed during the war, war ration books, photos, Jason's Poppy's (his step-grandfather but the "best man he ever knew") medals from the war - he fought in a tank battalion that spent 3 years in the European Theater INCLUDING the Battle of the Bulge, et cetera... TONS of amazing things. Here are a few photos.

For now I am gathering up my own vintage treasures from the discards pile and can't wait to post them in my shop including the mother lode of vintage yarns, drapes and clothes among many other things.

I will be in touch when I can... but for now enjoy these photos from last June on our trip here to Chicago.

Jason's grandfather's military ID, pic of his grandmother and Jason's uncle when he was a baby (born while his grandfather was deployed)

War ration book for Jason's uncle (he was a baby at the time)

This letter is from Jason's great Uncle Louis (his grandmother's brother, who was a medic in the Army): "Have received you Victory Day letter. Well the end of the war in Europe didn't change anything for us. Just and other [sic] day. No celebrating for us about coming home soon. Well I haven't got the points I need just 84 and you have to have 85 or more. I received a letter from Anne and answer the letter [this was his sister]. Well I guess it got lost some where. Still feeling fine and hope your all feeling the same. I will close now, so long. You dear brother Louis."

Jason's grandfather's deployment letter - when he was sent to Okinawa I believe.

More later... much love!
